An excellent question and the title of an article written in 2012 by Daniel K Sokol for the ‘Careers’ section of the Guardian newspaper. Embarking on a PhD is a huge commitment, both in terms of time and money, and you need to be sure that it is the right thing to do for you. Before applying, it is worth reflecting on why you think a PhD would be useful. As part of this it is worthwhile researching the value of PhDs in general as well as the relevance of a PhD to your own needs, whether you are thinking of pursuing it as an end in itself or as a career strategy. This article in the Guardian is a good place to start and you could also read our own post, Thinking of doing a PhD?
